The Wonderful World of High Definition TV

How High Definition TV Came to Be

Television has changed drastically since the time of my parents. Even in my mere twenty-eight years on the planet the world of television viewing has changed drastically. When I was young we had a small TV with a static filled screen and very poor colour and image quality. We had twenty, maybe twenty five channels; all movies were watched on VHS cassettes in which the tape was always warping or getting tangled; I don’t think cable programming existed. My mum strictly forbade my brother and I to watch more than one hour of television per day, and we were absolutely required to mute all the commercials. Imposing these sorts of restrictions on one’s children these days (although still not a bad idea) would be virtually impossible today as the world of television and media in general has grown so dramatically and become an even more integral part of day to day life. But as they say, if you can’t beat ‘em join ‘em. HD TV first began emerging in Britain in 1936. The first high resolution colour programming didn’t come out until 1953. However, true high definition as we know it today didn’t really emerge until the 1990s in the U.S. and Europe. High definition broadcasts in Europe didn’t become widespread until 2004. The high definition experience is a two part endeavour; you need both the TV and the broadcasting. This may seem like a lot, however, the costs are low and the rewards are well worth it.

Why SDTV Is Being Left Behind

Just as the VCR has been almost entirely replaced by the DVD player, standard definition television is being overrun by high definition technologies and will most likely become entirely obsolete in the next decade. So much programming is now being offered in this format, everything from sports to cooking shows to fashion programs. However, there is good news. As this technology has grown in popularity, and developments in the field have cropped up, the price has become more and more affordable for the average consumer and the quality and benefits have improved. This new technology provides visual information which is two to five times sharper than SDTV. It also provides the same aspect ratio (a term which indicates the number of lines of visual data presented on the screen simultaneously) that is used in movie theatres. It is important to keep in mind as well that the larger the screen the more benefit you will get from this new technology, so it may be wise to invest in a slightly larger television. The LCD TV with its’ flat screen is also much sleeker and more elegant in design than its’ antiquated counterparts, providing televisions which are more aesthetically pleasing and fit more easily in various parts of the home, despite their often larger screen size. SDTV is also losing popularity as people realize how wonderful it is to watch television with the clarity and detail of a movie in a theatre in the comfort of their own homes.

The Benefits of High Definition

The number one benefit to high definition TV is the amazing picture quality. If you have ever watched a football match on this type of television, seen the sweat stains on the players jerseys, the grimace that passes over a players face as he is taken down with a clean sweep, you can already appreciate the improvement in quality that comes with this technology. Although the clearer images provided to enthusiastic viewers on sports channels has helped to make this technology as popular as it is all types of programs are more enjoyable and satisfying when you can see them in such clear detail on a big TV. The kids will enjoy movies and cartoons more. I guarantee that the clay-mation film James and the Giant Peach is much cooler when seen at a higher resolution. It is also more informative as the kids can more easily see the artistic process of clay moulding which went in to creating the film. But not to fear, it is not just for the husband and kids. Have you ever watched Julia Childs make a beurre blanc sauce? The camera pans in on the simmering liquid, she’s illustrating the perfect point at which the sauce will indicate to you that it is ready, you’re supposed to look for an indicator, but you can’t see it properly? Well no more! Everything will be broadcast in more exquisite detail, and with a DVD recorder as well you never have to miss anything.

Additional Related Products and Services

Attaining high definition technologies in your home is not merely a matter of purchasing a certain television. You also need to purchase a high definition service. High definition signals are broadcast over the air with an antenna, through cable companies, through satellite television companies and also through video game systems. Even if you have the proper television you will not necessarily get programs broadcast in that format, thus you will not be taking full advantage of the product. These broadcasters are very affordable however, and often charge the same or slightly more as other providers. There are other supplemental products you can use with your new service which are quite exciting as well. There is a device called an upscaling DVD player which converts the image quality of your existing DVDs to high definition format. This is quite handy for maximizing the benefit of your pre-existing DVD collection. There are also services such as TiVo which allow you to digitally record programs for later viewing. This is great because there will be no more fights over who gets to watch their desired program when they air simultaneously. Also, with this service you can fast forward commercials and pause for bathroom breaks. There is also a device called an HDMI which allows you to use all of your related products more easily. There are so many benefits to this new technology and it has become so affordable there is really no reason not to switch over.
